Huskie Academics Support Center Updates

The Huskie Support Center is looking for tutors, supplemental infomation, university writing center. For the tutoring department, a general population of PACs will conduct individual tutoring sessions on study skills, time management, test anxiety, etc. through Tutor Matching Services beginning in Spring 2022. Students who do well in LTRE 191, 192, 193, or 194 will be targeted as the primary recruitment population. Supplementary and TMS training will occur before the Spring semester starts so the PACs are ready on January 18.

Status of Supplemental Information:

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is Funded through a Math Grant and the Huskie Academic Support Center budget

This program is a combination of Supplemental Instruction with Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs) sitting in and leading interactive group reviews of the material for each week in specific courses as well as offering one-to-one tutoring for the SI-connected and other courses (based on qualifications of the current hires). There are only 11 SILs this semester because 9 resigned. Support is being provided for

Status of University of Writing Center:

The UWC has 17 writing coaches (a mix of 10 graduate and 7 undergraduates) and 1 receptionist Use: This semester, the UWC has held 750 30-minute drop-in or virtual sessions. Student use was very slow the first 3 weeks and has picked up dramatically since week 4, which is somewhat consistent with previous years.

The UWC offers a variety of support services:

  1. Writing Focused Support: The coaches work with undergraduate and graduate students on all types of writing, including course assignments (brainstorming, finding sources, documentation, polishing), capstone projects (for Honors, Research programs, theses, and dissertations), resumes, cover letters, and applications (scholarships, graduate programs, Study Abroad, Research Rookies). They also work with faculty and staff on articles, books/chapters, conference material, faculty service reports, and tenure/sabbatical projects.

  2. Oral Communication Support: The coaches help clients outline and/or practice speeches and presentations.

  3. Presentations: The UWC staff have completed
    • 16 presentations for the Graduate School’s Career and Professional Development Program
    • 2 of the schedule 4 for the Honors Program
    • 10 topic-focused and/or service workshops (classes and NIU organizations)
    • 1 of 4 for First Year Success Series
  4. Virtual/in-person study experiences: The Special Program Coordinator facilitates
    • 8:00-10:00a.m. write-in events 4 mornings a week
    • 6:00-6:30p.m. check-ins 3 evenings a week
    • 2 Sunday afternoon write-ins
      • September 26 – 3:00-7:00p.m.
      • October 3 – 1:00-7:00p.m.
    • Note: most participants were part of the UWC’s Virtual Summer Study program for dissertation candidates
